LET'S TALK ABOUT PET! - Sustainability of rPET in packaging
In recent years, the demand for recycled PET (rPET) as a sustainable alternative to virgin material. But is a 100 % rPET content really the most environmentally friendly option?
Recycling limits
One of the reasons why people often ask about the right rPET content is the fact that PET bottles cannot be recycled endlessly. With every Recycling cycle the molecular chains become shorter, which increases the Quality of the material. To counteract this problem, it is often argued that an admixture of virgin material is necessary to maintain a high quality of the material.
100 % rPET
Packaging with a 100 % rPET content. This may initially appear to be progress towards a circular economy. However, the more pure rPET material is processed in the recycling plants, the more the quality of the rPET granulate obtained decreases in the long term.
Long-term perspective
The challenge is therefore to find a balance between the use of recycled material and the addition of virgin material. It is important to reduce the environmental impact, but we also need to ensure that the recycled material is still of high quality. This is the only way we can extend the life of PET bottles and minimise the environmental footprint through long-term use.
Let’s talk about PET!
The question of the right proportion of recycled PET in packaging remains complex. It requires an analysis of the ecological impact, the requirements of your products and the preferences of your customers.
