PPWR - Are you prepared?

The new EU packaging regulation (PPWR) - What's in store for the packaging industry?

The new EU packaging regulation, known as the Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), is imminent and will significantly change the packaging industry. Companies will have to adapt to a range of new requirements in order to fulfil the increased sustainability requirements. But what does this mean for your company in concrete terms?

Here are the most important points of the PPWR that will apply from 2030:

1. Reduction of packaging waste

Packaging waste in the EU is to be reduced by at least 15% by 2040. The aim is to use fewer resources and thus reduce the burden on the environment.

2. Recyclability of packaging

From 2030, all packaging must be recyclable. For companies, this means that they must design their packaging in such a way that it can be easily processed in the existing recycling loops.

3. Design für Recycling

Packaging must not only be recyclable, but also optimised in terms of weight and volume. The aim is to utilise materials efficiently and reduce the ecological footprint.

4. Minimum proportion of recycled material

A minimum percentage of recycled materials is set for packaging. This is intended to increase the demand for recycled plastics and strengthen the circular economy.

5. Maximum empty space quota

In future, packaging may contain a maximum of 50% empty space. This serves to optimise transport volumes and reduce unnecessary packaging material.

6. Labelling and disposal

Packaging must be clearly labelled to facilitate recycling. In addition, the correct disposal method must be indicated on all packaging to make it easier for consumers to dispose of it correctly.

7. Extended producer responsibility

In future, manufacturers and distributors will bear greater responsibility for the entire life cycle of their packaging. This includes production, use and disposal in order to fulfil environmental requirements.
